Design Studio Fire

Design Studio Fire was the capstone project in the final year of the undergraduate architecture degree at the University of Melbourne. In 2018 semester 2 the studio brief required an academic and sports complex as part of an extension for the University High School located in Parkville, Melbourne.
Reconciliation in Pedagogy introduces a bridge in the cultural education of the first owners of the land through a topological intervention in the architectural design. Such allows traditional practices suitable for educational institutions like welcome to country ceremony and also formal and informal gatherings, such can also be used for the school's functioning
The form of the academic building came about by using the indigenous sign of the meeting place. The center as the symbol suggests was used as a podium for smoking eucalyptus leaves for traditional ceremonies. The green cuboids represent the classrooms or areas for knowledge, such have been located on the paths taken by the indigenous to travel to the hearth or the meeting point. Then intention is to metaphorically represent the paths taken by the knowledgeable indigenous people and its dissipation in such meetings. The classrooms are then aligned on one side to open up one side and the spaces in-between the classrooms become informal learning spaces. The same form continues in upper levels.
